15. Recommendation to approve a resolution supporting the Truckee Meadows Public Lands Management Act and to request Nevada's federal congressional delegation to advance this federal public lands legislation to support conservation, recreation, and economic development in the Truckee Meadows region. Generally speaking and if ultimately passed by Congress and signed into law by the President, the Act allows for federal land to be made eligible for disposal/sale (anticipated 14,606 acres), creates permanent land conservation areas (anticipated 719,687 acres), conveys federal land to local government entities for recreation and public purposes (anticipated 4,701 acres), transfers additional federal land into trust for local tribes (anticipated 22,415 acres), and helps to fund additional land preservation and conservation projects statewide. Manager's Office. (All Commission Districts.) FOR POSSIBLE ACTION
I live in the S Reno area of Washoe County and I want to conserve our public lands because we are losing too much open space. Please support this resolution."
As a native Renoite I have witnessed sweeping changes in Washoe County open spaces over my lifetime. Growth of our communities, increasing strains on natural resources and pressures on wild flora and fauna are negatively impacting Nevada’s wild lands. Throughout my life, my family and I have enjoyed this open country that is increasingly threatened. I am writing today to ask every member of the Washoe County Commission to vote in support of this legislation which seeks to preserve the wild spaces that remain today. As a grandmother and second generation Nevadan I ask for your vote which is critical to preserve these wild places for the generations to come. Vote yes! Thank you.
I live in Washoe County District 2 and I strongly and urgently request the commissioners, notably Mr. Clark (of District 2), to support the Truckee Meadows Public Lands Management Act (TMPLMA).
We need the TMPLMA to protect our incredible open spaces that offer Northern Nevadans and its visitors places for outdoor recreation, solitude, and adventure and to improve our recreational opportunities - including for hunting, camping, hiking and ATV and 4x4 exploration - and protecting and expanding our open space and wilderness. These are things that are the reason many of us live here and the TMPLA will protect these priceless public treasures, which are threatened by the pressures of population growth and development
I have experienced the unique beauty and important wildlife, cultural and recreational values of many of the resources that the TMPLMA will protect. Although I would prefer much greater protection for these and other public lands, I support the current TMPLMA proposal because it significantly improves the protection of our public lands notably, fewer acres are proposed for “disposal” for “economic development”, it provides for thoughtful and justifiable transfers to local government entities for other public uses, and it designates new Wilderness Areas and Conservation Areas. Furthermore, it provides benefits to the native tribes from whom they the land was stolen.
Please support this bill and demonstrate leadership for the future of Washoe County.
As a Washoe County resident, I hereby respectfully and urgently request the commissioners, and in particular my District 2 commissioner, Mr. Clark, to support the Truckee Meadows Public Lands Management Act (TMPLMA).
With the demanding pressures of population growth and development, the TMPLMA is timely. Washoe County has incredible open spaces that offer Northern Nevadans and its visitors places for outdoor recreation, solitude, and adventure. By increasing recreational opportunities - including for hunting, camping, hiking and ATV and 4x4 exploration - and protecting and expanding our open space and wilderness, the TMPLA will ensure these benefits are protected and thereby underscores a major reason why many of us chose to live in Nevada.
I have visited most of these areas and know personally of their unique beauty and important wildlife, cultural and recreational values. In my view, this most recent TMPLMA proposal significantly improves the constellation of uses of our public lands in Washoe County, including designating new Wilderness Areas and Conservation Areas as well as transferring a more restricted number of acres than proposed in previous years for economic development and transfers to local government entities for other public uses and to local tribes for potential development under their authority.
Please support this bill and demonstrate leadership for the future of Washoe County.
As a 27-year Nevada resident, I am strongly requesting that the commissioners and especially my District 2 commissioner, Mr. Clark, support the Truckee Meadows Public Lands Management Act. As a Washoe County ranch owner, I find this bill creates a balance between economic development while providing permanent protection for the public lands we in the county depend on to support our Nevada unique way of life. When not focused on the needs of my ranch and caring for my rescue horses, I enjoy hiking, taking pictures, 4x4 and motorcycle exploration, camping, and rockhounding on the Washoe County public lands this bill will permanently protect. This bill not only protects our way of life, but also keeps these lands accessible for all future generations.
As a 43-year Washoe County resident, I am encouraging the commissioners and especially my District 2 commissioner, Mr. Clark, to approve support for the Truckee Meadows Public Lands Management Act as it strikes a good balance between economic development while providing permanent protection for the public lands we in the county depend to support our Nevadan unique way of life. Activities on public lands that are protected by this bill include hiking, hunting, 4x4 and ATV exploration, camping, and rockhounding. This bill not only protects the way of life we old-timers had grown to enjoy, but will assure that our grandchildren and great grandchildren will have the same experiences and opportunities that make living in Nevada truly exceptional.
* I live in the Reno area of Washoe County and I want to conserve our public lands because I use public lands throughout Nevada for recreation. Protected status will NOT prevent people from accessing public lands. Removing that protected status is likely to reduce access. Please support this resolution.
I live in the Reno area of Washoe County and I want to conserve our public lands because these designations will NOT prevent people from accessing public lands. In fact, the opposite it true; they will protect these special places from other potential uses that could diminish access and the public’s enjoyment of the land. Hunters are not impacted by the proposal – they WILL be able to access these lands as they have historically. Please support this resolution.
I live in District 5 and encourage ALL commissioners to support this resolution. We are so fortunate to have such amazing wide open spaces still let relatively undisturbed in northern Washoe and we need to do everything we can to protect them for wildlife habitat, preserving dark skies and dispersed recreation. Please support this resolution.
I very much support the Truckee Meadows Public Lands Act. This will protect beautiful areas while still allowing for recreation like hunting, hiking, OHVs, and more. It will also give our community to grow and provide more housing and recreation in urban areas. Please support this resolution.
I love camping and hunting in rural, remote Nevada. Seeing a herd of bighorn sheep in high rock canyon this year was an all time highlight and something we need to protect. Me must expand public land protections and keep Nevada wild and open.
I LOVE Nevada. I love being outside and recreating on so many of our public lands. There is noting as peaceful as being outside hiking and camping, here. I have lived in 6 states over my lifetime, and none of the others can hold a candle to Nevada. Please support the Truckee Meadows Public lands management Act. I am very much in favor of support for conservation, recreation, and economic development in the Truckee Meadows region. Our public lands are the best part of our incredible state.
I live in the southwest of Reno area of Washoe County and I want to conserve our public lands because it is getting harder and harder to find quiet open spaces to enjoy the night sky and desert grandness. We need Congress to act now to protect the stunning wide-open spaces in northern Washoe County, including Massacre Rim, which is world-renowned for its dark skies. Hays Canyon retains high cultural, scenic, wildlife and recreational values and needs permanent protection. Northern Washoe is home to valuable wildlife habitat that needs to be preserved in order for native species to thrive. These designations will NOT prevent people from accessing public lands. In fact, the opposite it true; they will protect these special places from other potential uses that could diminish access and the public’s enjoyment of the land. Hunters are not impacted by the proposal – they WILL be able to access these lands as they have historically. Please support this resolution.
Please support this resolution! Like almost everyone I know, I love living here because of our beautiful wide open public lands. This legislation preserves almost all of these wonderful open spaces as is for all of us to enjoy and preserves our access to them. Thank you!

Strong support for open space where people can go to unwind.

Wilderness is essential and necessary and preserving it is the only option as so much relies on it and it’s our responsibility to protect it.

Whatever we can do to protect Nevada wild lands is of top priority. Thank you for voting this through
