Agenda Item
7. Strategic Planning recap and updates to the Board: This is a workshop item. The purpose of the Strategic Planning Workshop is to discuss prior matters from previous Workshops and possibly give direction regarding strategic objectives for the current Fiscal Year 2023 and possible Fiscal Year 2024 objectives of the Washoe County Commission. Topics of discussion include the following from previous Strategic Planning Workshops: Regionalization of Dispatch/Emergency Management Services/Fire, Climate Resilience, Equity, Election System, Housing, Master Plan Update, Infrastructure and Facilities Scorecard Update. FOR POSSIBLE ACTION
I wanted to echo Mr. Bell and state that climate change must be a priority for the County. Please consider resilience actions, investments in shade structures for the public and the river (to cool the water), the increasing temperatures in our Meadows, and the psychological needs of people to have green spaces. Investments today could make all the difference tomorrow.
Thank you for understanding the risks we, and our children, face from human-caused climate change. It is time to put this crisis front and center of county leadership. By holding the levers of power you are called upon to act for our welfare and curb 'business-as-usual' behaviors based on fossil fuel consumption. I support the County Board of Commissioners in their efforts towards fire season mitigation and climate change resilience: through the promotion of renewable energy for businesses and residents; through robust and reliable public transportation; through ‘greening’ the county vehicle fleet; through conversion of county trucks to natural gas or electricity; through education programs about climate change; through instigating community solar for disadvantaged communities who want to get off fossil fuel energy; through planning codes that incentivize developers and builders to offer electrified homes , EV ready and with rooftop solar; and through planning codes to incentivize warehouse owners and builders to install rooftop solar.
