I am writing in support of Al Rogers in hopes he continue to serve on the Library Board of Trustees for Washoe County. I care deeply about the future of our beautiful public libraries and appreciate Trustee Rogers as a level headed board member.
My public comment is in regards to agenda items 8.E.1 and 8.E.2.
First, regarding item 8.E.1, I support the reappointment of Al Rogers to serve another four-year term on the Library Board of Trustees. I believe that Trustee Rogers is a competent, effective public servant, whose knowledge of the WCLS and grasp of its relevant issues, as well as his abilities to build consensus and to explain complicated procedures to the layperson, are all assets to the board. My father, Arnie Maurins, was the previous WCLS library director, and to this day, he speaks highly of his time working with Trustee Rogers. He is an ally to both library employees and library patrons, and his reappointment to the LBOT is a true no-brainer.
Second, regarding item 8.E.2, I also support the submission of the "Renew Washoe Libraries Resolution" to the voters of Washoe County for this year's election. It is a simple measure that would renew a 30-year tax override, and is *not* a new tax. Its passage would enable the WCLS to, among other things, renovate the South Valleys and Spanish Springs branches, eventually construct a new North Valleys library, and expand library services through Bookmobile and book vending machine services in areas that are currently underserved. For a mere two cents from every $100 of assessed property value -- again, as a tax override that is already on the books, not as a new tax -- we can do all of this. If this measure were to fail, library employees would be laid off, budgets for books and technology would be significantly cut, and library hours -- including weekend and evening hours -- would be greatly reduced. Allowing voters to hopefully approve its passage in November starts with approving this resolution.
I support the reappointment of Al Rogers for another term on the Washoe County Library Board of Trustees. I have observed several recent Washoe County Library Board meetings. At these meetings, his grasp of the issues, applicable procedures, ability to explain matters under review and to develop consensus are outstanding. His experience with Washoe County and his non-confrontational style and deep understanding of library issues and concerns as well as his ability to collaborate make him an ideal Library Trustee. His priorities are serving the community as a whole and helping both the Library and the Library Board be efficient and effective. Reappointing Al Rogers is in the best interest of Washoe County.
I am writing in support of the reappointment of Trustee Al Rogers. Trustee Rogers is one of the most experienced members of the board, which contains several relatively new members, and he has demonstrated an understanding of the role of the board, and of open meeting law that makes him a valuable addition to the board.
I am writing in support of 8.E.1. to retain Trustee Rogers for the Washoe County Library Board of Trustees. I have attended the few Library Board Meetings held since December, and I have been extremely impressed with Trustee Rogers's grasp of knowledge of how the County works as well as understanding of issues such as the importance of supporting the upcoming Renew Washoe Libraries Resolution planned for this election year. Because of Trustee Rogers's years of experience working with Washoe County, he has an understanding of how to work with the County to help build and strengthen our libraries that other trustees do not. While I am grateful for most of the other Trustee's work, I believe that Trustee Rogers has shown the necessary leadership to help guide the Library Board of Trustees through the very important upcoming year.
