    To: Washoe County Commission
Re: Support of Seven Magic Mountains
    From: Leah Sanders, Reno resident

    September 7, 2024

I am submitting under general comments since I could not find the agenda item for reconsideration of Seven Magic Mountains funding, and I cannot attend the September 10 meeting since I will be out of town at a reunion.

I was impressed that the Washoe County Commission allocated funds to bring this pivotal, monumental, and popular art piece home to Reno. It promises to stimulate discussion, curiosity, innovation, imagination, and be as great an attraction as it has been in Las Vegas. Those who have seen it are amazed. I concur.

It came to my attention that a string of comments on Nextdoor called for rescinding the funds because they could be better spent on other causes. Commissioner Clark has asked for reconsideration. I wrote the commission. Thank you for your responses to my first email letter.

I support bringing the sculpture by this famous international artist. I do not support the incivility of opponents who call the sculpture “a pile of rocks.” I’m supposing they have not seen it.

When it is discussed, I hope the county commission will find a way to show support of this innovative piece that fits well in Reno. I work with educators of young children, many of whom have experienced Seven Magic Mountains and expressed that children’s imagination, curiosity, wonder, and innovation will be stimulated in a way not possible in the classroom.

I will watch the video of the meeting when I return.

    Regards,

    Leah Sanders
