    Dear BCC,
I am writing to urge you to work to ensure our state library systems remain funded in full. We need this resource as Nevadans and you have the power to just allocate those funds that will already be taxed as this is not a new tax. Please fund the library system!
    Thank you very much.

Libraries are a critical community resource, and our city is better for having them. They should be celebrated and supported, and this is a great way to do so.

    Good morning Commissioners,
A native Nevadan told me that Nevada's low literacy rate is probably due in part to Nevada's predominately hospitality and casino economy. Many parents work more than one job to make ends meet and don't have enough time to make sure their kids are achieving in school. Nevadans know we need to diversify Nevada's economy, which is vulnerable to pandemics and risky economic policies. The business incubator at UNR is helping. But, to get admitted to UNR, our kids have to be literate at a level good enough to complete high school. Too many kids don't make the cut.
In addition to preparing for higher education, reading helps combat bullying. Readers develop mental capacity for empathy by imagining plot circumstances from diverse points of view. Reading also helps reduce self-abuse and suicide, because readers discover other characters or people who experience similar challenges they themselves are experiencing.
Gerontologists and neuroscientists recommend reading because the act of focusing slows mental decline and risk of dementia.
The County Commissioners should renew the 2-cents per $100 allocation of property tax revenue toward funding Washoe County Public Library. No one will complain that property taxes increased (since they wouldn't) and the benefits outweigh the costs. But many people will complain if our sense of community provided at our libraries is disrupted.
    Thank you
    Cynthia Cooper

As a Reno resident since childhood who has made and continues to make great use of the library and its resources, I wholeheartedly approve this measure. It is imperative that our libraries receive the appreciation and funding they deserve, especially in an age of rampant misinformation and the increasing reduction of unpaid, family-friendly third spaces for children, the unhoused population, and others. Libraries do so much for communities, and as the federal government slashes the budget for education and imposes censorship of minority voices and achievements under the guise of removing "DEI", we need libraries more than ever.

Now that the federal government has taken action to dismantle the Institute of Museum and Library Services, it is more important than ever that we support and fund libraries on the local level. I am a library patron and see on a regular basis the number of people who rely on the services provided there. The library continues to adapt to the needs of the community through a wide variety of programs and services in addition to promoting literacy. Please continue to support this valuable and beloved institution.
