Community Services. (Commission District 2.) FOR POSSIBLE ACTION
As a resident of South Reno, parent and coach (both baseball and softball) of Washoe Little League since 2006 I think I can speak as a subject expert. These softball fields are way overdue. The girls need fields of their own. As a community we need can show the girls that they are deserving of what the boys have had for a generation. I am 100% on board with this project. Go Washoe!!!
We were the original team to start with Washoe LL softball and thru all the hard work dedication of girls and families, this is beyond needed and earned for future generations! I would love to see this organization come full circle
I'm a proud native Nevadan, a member of Washoe Little League, constituent of district2, and the father of two girls who play little league softball in the South Valleys via Washoe Little League. Their lives have been profoundly enriched through participation in youth sports, with South Truckee Meadows Park serving as the backdrop for these invaluable experiences. Sadly limited field spaces hampers the growth of this amazing organization and limits the number of kids that can experience this development opportunity.
Agenda Item 9 represents an essential first step in expanding and improving the incredible community resource we know as the South Valley's Regional park. By taking this first step ad enhancing the park's capacity and facilities, this project will ensure that youth sports in the greater Truckee Meadows area continue to thrive. It aligns perfectly with the vision and intent of the original land grant and the South Valleys Regional Park Master Plan.
The contractor selected has undergone thorough vetting, with Washoe County staff ensuring that they are the most qualified to deliver this project according to established policies and procedures.
I respectfully urge you to vote in favor of the selected contractor and approve the first phase of this transformative project. Together, we can further develop South Valleys Regional Park into an even greater asset for our community and future generations.
I have coached my daughters softball teams for over 5 years. As a coach my biggest challenge has been finding a field for the girls to practice and play on. We have to beg high schools and parks departments for field time. Many times we have had to play on fields covered with weeds, goat heads and horse manure along with dangerous sink holes from improper maintenance while the boys play baseball on beautiful fields. There is so much growing involvement in girls softball in south Reno and there is a desperate need for more fields. Approving this project is an absolute no brainer. This will be a gift to the community and to so many girls now and for so many generations in the future. Please do the right thing for our girls and approve this project. Thank you
I support building softball fields at the South Valley’s location. Not only is the sport of softball equally as popular as baseball, but South Reno’s population has grown so much that there is a very real need for these fields in that area. As a parent of both softball and baseball players, I think this is a great idea. Also, local restaurants and food places would benefit as well. A lot of families buy dinner or lunch after games because they didn’t have time to cook. I see this project as a benefit for the youth sports community and the surrounding businesses.
Our city is growing, improving and evolving and all areas of our beloved town need to grow, improve and evolve along with it. It’s quite apparent that Reno has a lack of sports fields available for private and recreational sports, especially youth sports. We must want better for our children. “Kids spend too much time inside and on their phones, back in my day….” We all know that person (or ourselves) that complains about this but they aren’t wrong. One major concern is that we don’t have reliable recreation that these kids deserve. Because our youth needs this park and recreation space in this zip code the projects in this plan are greatly anticipated. We have three daughters in Washoe Little League, all three in softball. These plans will greatly benefit them and the overall community. Having this space could change the life’s of generations to come.
To whom it may concern,
This project is absolutely necessary, not just because the well-known fact Reno has a lack of sports fields available for private and recreational sports but because our youth needs this. Of course, there are the physical benefits of sports for our youth during a time when adolescent obesity is it at epidemic proportions. But more importantly sports get these kids off their devices, outdoors and improves their emotional well-being. Youth sports have shown to lower rates of anxiety and depression, decrease stress, increase self-esteem and confidence, reduce risk of suicide, reduced substance abuse, increase cognitive performance and better performance in school, improves teamwork, teaches hard work and dealing with adversity. What better gift can we give our youth.
As parents and residents of 89511 we want to voice our full support for the construction of the softball facilities and park expansion of the South Valleys Regional Park. Although the park in our neighborhood, Thomas Creek Park is amazing, there is an overall lack of park and recreation space in this zip code and the projects in this plan are greatly anticipated. We have two children in Washoe Little League, one softball and one baseball player, and these plans will greatly benefit them and the overall community. It is impossible to drive all the way to Golden Eagle for softball/baseball and not question why a facility like that does not exist in the greater Galena/South Reno area. Also, we support the construction of the skatepark included in the master plan given the closest skatepark is at Neil Road or Mira Loma.
Let’s get these softball fields built for the up and coming female athletes. They need a home to play softball.
